Financing Available to Maintain and Restore Heritage Properties

Community and Cultural Affairs

The Board of Governors of Museum and Heritage Prince Edward Island are pleased to announce that the terms of the Jaynes trust have been amended to enable interested parties to acquire, maintain and/or improve property of a historical, architectural, natural or cultural interest. The Jaynes Trust was established with the Heritage Foundation in 2000 by Mildred and the late Robert Jaynes.

Eligible properties are those registered or designated under the provincial Heritage Places Protection Act or the municipal bylaws of Summerside or Charlottetown, and must be on, or be eligible to be placed on, the National Register of Historic Places. Financing will be provided for work which is necessary to preserve, conserve or restore the heritage elements of a structure and which comply with the Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada.

Community and Cultural Affairs Minister Elmer MacFadyen, who serves as a Trustee of the Jaynes Trust, said, “This change will help ensure that the heritage character of designated properties in our province is preserved and protected for future generations.”

Dr. Satadal Dasgupta, Chair of Museum and Heritage PEI, said the Board of Governors is very pleased with the changes. “It will support our mandate to preserve Island heritage and will help increase public understanding and appreciation of our province’s distinct cultural legacy.”

Loans will be administered by the PEI Lending Agency for amounts from $10,000 - $40,000.
