March is a Time to Celebrate Prince Edward Island’s Social Workers

Social Services and Seniors

As social workers across Canada celebrate their profession this month, Social Services and Seniors Minister Doug Currie is recognizing the important role of Prince Edward Island’s more than 200 social workers.

Each year, social workers celebrate National Social Work Month in March to recognize their contributions to society and to spread awareness about their profession. This marks the designated week for Prince Edward Island.

This year’s theme is Social Workers Making a Difference in Seniors’ Lives, recognizing the contributions of social workers in diverse settings including hospitals, schools, government offices, correctional facilities and advocacy organizations.

“Throughout my time as a school principal, and now as Minister of Social Services and Seniors and Minister of Health, I have gained a tremendous amount of respect and admiration for people who hear the calling to work in the social work profession,” said Minister Currie.

“No one can call their work easy. But social workers always stand out as some of the most professionally trained, diverse and compassionate people in any setting. They improve the lives of Islanders on a daily basis, and I thank them for their ongoing service,” he said.

With their profession always in demand, Minister Currie added that the Department of Social Services and Seniors and the Prince Edward Island Association of Social Workers are constantly recruiting additional skilled social workers who are interested in joining the public service.
