“I am very proud of the service that the Province's Public Library System is providing to Islanders,” said Minister Bertram. “Our libraries have introduced new services and resources, responded to the needs of newcomers, helped to heighten levels of family literacy, and increased library hours in many communities to better serve our comminutes.”

Libraries are a shared responsibility between government and the community. Communities provide, furnish and maintain the facility; the province provides the resources and the staff.

Minister Bertram noted that, in the last ten years, there has been substantial growth in library use in the communities surrounding Charlottetown. In both Stratford and Cornwall library, use has doubled in recent years. In 2008, circulation in Cornwall grew by 35%, the fastest growth rate in the province.

“These communities have realized the value of public libraries and the importance of having library services in their area,” the Minister said. “By increasing hours in Cornwall and Stratford, we are both responding to public expectations and pursuing our mandate to enhance the rich cultural environment of our province.”
