New Made-in-PEI Curriculum Resource Helps Students Learn about Island Life
Communities, Cultural Affairs and Labour
“The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development in conjunction with the Department of Communities, Cultural Affairs and Labour have developed a beautiful new resource to complement the History curriculum in Island schools,” said Minister Greenan. “It is an excellent publication that highlights our historic buildings and the rich history behind them,” he said.
“These beautiful heritage buildings throughout our One Island Community are filled with colourful stories of our past,” says Minister Bertram. “By learning more about our heritage places, students are bringing the past to life and developing a greater understanding of our rich Island history,” she said.
The Prince Edward Island Historic Places resource includes descriptions of 33 heritage buildings in PEI, as well as captions and illustrations of the people and circumstances associated with them throughout their history.
The Historic Places resource provides many ways to extend historical learning. Students can use the information as a basis for creative writing, to research Heritage Fair projects, or to organize visits to historic places.
All teachers of Grade 6 Social Studies (English, French and French Immersion), Grade 9 French, and Grade 12 PEI History are receiving copies of the new resource.
Many Islanders were involved in the creation of the resource including: Georges Arsenault, Ken Shelton, Monique Lafontaine, Elaine Schuller, Laura Ann Noye, Edward MacDonald, Tammy MacDonald, Boyde Beck, René Hurtubise, Véronique Bouchard, Frank Hennessey, Sheila Barnes, Imelda Arsenault and Brian Simpson.
The resource is available in English and French. It was published in Prince Edward Island with the assistance of the Historic Places Initiative, a joint federal, provincial and territorial program, to increase public awareness of the importance of Canada’s historic places.
