The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of National Revenue and Minister for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), the Honourable Ron MacKinley, Prince Edward Island Minister of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development, along with community group representatives today announced funding for infrastructure upgrades for the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 18 in Miscouche, the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 17 in Wellington, the YMCA of Prince Edward Island (Summerside) and the College of Piping and Celtic Performing Arts of Canada.

“Our Government, through the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund, is committed to supporting Island projects and communities,” said Minister Shea. “Expansion of infrastructure in Prince County will not only create more natural gathering points in our neighbourhoods, but also generate economic activity and jobs.”

The Government of Canada is investing $123,885 from the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund. The Government of Prince Edward Island is investing $87,320 in the two Legions and the YMCA projects under the Island Community Fund. Community proponents have also made contributions to their respective projects.

“The Government of Prince Edward Island is pleased to invest in improvements to these important community facilities,” Minister MacKinley said. “Our contribution, through the Island Community Fund, reflects a strong commitment to the quality of life for rural residents and to help accelerate economic opportunities in communities across the province.”

• The Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 18 in Miscouche will receive $19,400 from the Government of Canada and $15,520 from the Government of Prince Edward Island to upgrade the interior and exterior of the facility. This includes renovations to the washroom and front doors, and the installation of a security system.

• The Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 17 in Wellington will receive $18,300 from the Government of Canada and $18,300 from the Government of Prince Edward Island to make necessary upgrades to the facility. This includes the installation of a new elevator and new automatic front door openers, as well as new light fixtures.

• The YMCA of Prince Edward Island (Summerside) will receive $67,355 from the Government of Canada and $53,500 from the Government of Prince Edward Island to upgrade the interior and exterior of the facility. This includes re-shingling the roof, as well as improving the heating and insulation systems.

• The College of Piping and Celtic Performing Arts of Canada will receive $18,830 from the Government of Canada to make energy efficient upgrades to the facility. This includes installing portable electrical panels for outdoor concerts, equipment for online courses and trusses for lighting and sound equipment, as well as repairing the amphitheatre roof panels.

“The upgrades to the interior and exterior of our Miscouche Legion will certainly help make the facility more accessible to veterans and community members,” said John MacKinnon, Manager of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 18 in Miscouche. “We are thankful to receive support for these infrastructure improvements from the federal and provincial governments. These renovations will help sustain the Legion for many years to come.”

In Economic Action Plan 2012, the Government of Canada announced plans to further modernize Canada’s infrastructure by committing $150 million over two years for the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund. The Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency is delivering the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund in Atlantic Canada with an allocation of $16.6 million.

The Prince Edward Island Government is delivering funds to eligible projects through the Island Community Fund, a multi-year funding commitment to address infrastructure needs in communities across the province.
