A new paved promenade in Stanhope is the final piece needed to finish a bicycle-friendly route from Charlottetown to Prince Edward Island National Park, says Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Minister Robert Vessey.

“This pathway has been a priority of the Community of North Shore for a long time, and I want to thank residents and the Stanhope Golf and Country Club for their patience,” Minister Vessey said. “Now cyclists will be able to ride more safely – from St. Peters Road through York and all the way to the beach.”

The newly opened 1.1-kilometre section connects the paved shoulder of Route 25 to the existing paved promenade on Bayshore Road, completing a continuous network of paved shoulders and pathways from the Charlottetown city limits to Gulf Shore Parkway in the national park. The area can be seen in Grid 26 of the online Provincial Road Atlas.

“We are pleased that Minister Vessey and the province have provided a walkway for residents and visitors in our municipality for recreational use,” said Gordon Ellis, chair of the Community of North Shore. “I’m sure it will be well used and appreciated for years to come.”

Cycling PEI has worked with the department since 2008 to get the promenade completed.

“Minster Vessey continues to be very proactive in making the roads safe for cyclists, and we acknowledged this by awarding the minister our Builder’s Award in 2013,” said Mike Connolly, Cycling PEI’s executive director. “This project has been on our infrastructure wish list, and we are ecstatic that the province and the minister have taken the initiative to implement it.”
