Biographical history

Katherine Creed (1870-1941) was the daughter of William Creed (1827-1898) and Martha Acorn (1838-1923) of Sturgeon, Prince Edward Island. One of twelve children, Katherine's siblings were: Joseph Benjamin (1862-1939); Amelia Ann (1864-1866); George Jacob (1865-1894); James (1867-1939); Lemuel (1867-?); Mary (1872-1924); Lelia Maria (1874-1962); Martha Jessie (1877-1964); Damarius Laura (1880-1956); Richard (1882-1965); and Charles John (1884-1944).

Katherine Creed worked as a servant in the household of William Dawson in Charlottetown ca. 1891. By 1904, she was living in Brooklyn, New York. Katherine married John Sloane (1871-1945) in 1919 and moved back to PEI. They initially lived with Catherine's sister Mary (Creed) Peardon in Charlottetown before settling in Lower Montague. Katherine was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows in Montague in 1923.

Custodial history

Scope and content

The fonds consists of forty-one letters addressed to Katherine (Creed) Sloane from her mother, sisters, brothers, sister-in-laws, nephew, and nieces dating from 1904 to 1925. The letters relay information relating to Creed family members, residents, and local businesses of the Dundas and Montague communities. The collection of correspondence also contains letters from Katherine's friends, such as Kate Poole and Frances Horton of Montague, congratulating her on the occasion of her wedding. A wedding announcement for Ella May Cameron and Philip Wright (1907) and a receipt for membership to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (1923) are also contained in the collection.
