Scope and content

In October 1946 a small one column article appeared in the "Charlottetown Guardian" under the heading of "Old Charlottetown". From then until 1955 Islanders were treated to an eclectic selection of items relating to the early history of the city and the Island. Although others such as Major T. E. MacNutt also contributed to the column it was Frank Walker who provided the majority of the selections and presented them to the public. The items were drawn from a wide range of published sources but primarily from newspapers in the Legislative Library collection. The published sources were often rare volumes containing incidents long-forgotten by the majority of Islanders. Selections covered the major events such as Confederation as well as social history. The more off-beat an item was the more likely it was to appear in "Old Charlottetown".
