Scope and content
The series consists of a diary recording Private Frank Walker's experiences as a stretcher bearer with the Canadian Field Ambulance, Army Medical Corps, during World War I. The diary captures his thoughts and emotions from the excitement of enlistment on 8 August 1914 through months of training in Canada and England and active duty in the battles of Ypres, Vimy, Festubert, Givenchy and Courcelotte on the Western Front, to the disenchantment of the postscript following his invaliding out after Passchendaele. In addition to the descriptions of active service, the diary contains pages of poetry, images of comrades-in arms, and newspaper articles about the war. The diary was written by Frank Walker in July 1919, reconstructed, and probably edited, from scraps of paper sent home to his mother during the war.
