Scope and content
The series consists of volumes of decrees issued in the Court of Chancery by the Master of the Rolls or the Vice-Chancellor in response to the cases brought before the Court. Decrees are the orders or sentence of the court pronounced after hearing and understanding all the points at issue and determining the rights of all persons in the suit "according to equity and good conscience". They are not for or against either party. Most are final but some may be provisional or preliminary and one case may generate more than one decree.
Many involve the ordering of medical examinations for persons of unsound mind and judgments made on the basis of this testimony, the appointment of guardians for minor children and those of unsound mind, and the settling of disputes over the disposition of estates. They are recorded by the Registrar along with the date of the decree and the date of registration and may be signed by the Master of the Rolls or the Vice-Chancellor. Each volume is indexed by case.
